Sync gem(4) with head as of r179925 except for r169269 (skipped for
performance reasons) and r175418 (doesn't apply). Amongst others this
brings:
- lots of bug fixes and improvements,
- support for some additional Apple GMAC variants,
- actual support for Sun GEM,
- machine-independency.
