* Remove badsect(8).Konstantin Belousov2017-11-054-342/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Failure modes of the modern (that is, produced in the last 25 years) hard drives and SSDs made the utility outdated. Since the kernel interface to support it was removed in r324853, cut the userspace remnants as well. Discussed with: bde (who does not like the removal) Sponsored by: The FreeBSD Foundation MFC after: 2 weeks Notes: svn path=/head/; revision=325452

* Commit the 64-bit inode project.Konstantin Belousov2017-05-231-12/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Extend the ino_t, dev_t, nlink_t types to 64-bit ints. Modify struct dirent layout to add d_off, increase the size of d_fileno to 64-bits, increase the size of d_namlen to 16-bits, and change the required alignment. Increase struct statfs f_mntfromname[] and f_mntonname[] array length MNAMELEN to 1024. ABI breakage is mitigated by providing compatibility using versioned symbols, ingenious use of the existing padding in structures, and by employing other tricks. Unfortunately, not everything can be fixed, especially outside the base system. For instance, third-party APIs which pass struct stat around are broken in backward and forward incompatible ways. Kinfo sysctl MIBs ABI is changed in backward-compatible way, but there is no general mechanism to handle other sysctl MIBS which return structures where the layout has changed. It was considered that the breakage is either in the management interfaces, where we usually allow ABI slip, or is not important. Struct xvnode changed layout, no compat shims are provided. For struct xtty, dev_t tty device member was reduced to uint32_t. It was decided that keeping ABI compat in this case is more useful than reporting 64-bit dev_t, for the sake of pstat. Update note: strictly follow the instructions in UPDATING. Build and install the new kernel with COMPAT_FREEBSD11 option enabled, then reboot, and only then install new world. Credits: The 64-bit inode project, also known as ino64, started life many years ago as a project by Gleb Kurtsou (gleb). Kirk McKusick (mckusick) then picked up and updated the patch, and acted as a flag-waver. Feedback, suggestions, and discussions were carried by Ed Maste (emaste), John Baldwin (jhb), Jilles Tjoelker (jilles), and Rick Macklem (rmacklem). Kris Moore (kris) performed an initial ports investigation followed by an exp-run by Antoine Brodin (antoine). Essential and all-embracing testing was done by Peter Holm (pho). The heavy lifting of coordinating all these efforts and bringing the project to completion were done by Konstantin Belousov (kib). | | | | | | | | | | | | Renumber cluase 4 to 3, per what everybody else did when BSD granted them permission to remove clause 3. My insistance on keeping the same numbering for legal reasons is too pedantic, so give up on that point. * Create a new 32-bit fs_flags word in the superblock. Add code to moveKirk McKusick2002-11-271-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | the old 8-bit fs_old_flags to the new location the first time that the filesystem is mounted by a new kernel. One of the unused flags in fs_old_flags is used to indicate that the flags have been moved. Leave the fs_old_flags word intact so that it will work properly if used on an old kernel. Change the fs_sblockloc superblock location field to be in units of bytes instead of in units of filesystem fragments. The old units did not work properly when the fragment size exceeeded the superblock size (8192). Update old fs_sblockloc values at the same time that the flags are moved. * This commit adds basic support for the UFS2 filesystem. The UFS2Kirk McKusick2002-06-211-3/+21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | filesystem expands the inode to 256 bytes to make space for 64-bit block pointers. It also adds a file-creation time field, an ability to use jumbo blocks per inode to allow extent like pointer density, and space for extended attributes (up to twice the filesystem block size worth of attributes, e.g., on a 16K filesystem, there is space for 32K of attributes). UFS2 fully supports and runs existing UFS1 filesystems. New filesystems built using newfs can be built in either UFS1 or UFS2 format using the -O option. In this commit UFS1 is the default format, so if you want to build UFS2 format filesystems, you must specify -O 2. This default will be changed to UFS2 when UFS2 proves itself to be stable. In this commit the boot code for reading UFS2 filesystems is not compiled (see /sys/boot/common/ufsread.c) as there is insufficient space in the boot block. Once the size of the boot block is increased, this code can be defined. Things to note: the definition of SBSIZE has changed to SBLOCKSIZE. The header file <ufs/ufs/dinode.h> must be included before <ufs/ffs/fs.h> so as to get the definitions of ufs2_daddr_t and ufs_lbn_t. Still TODO: Verify that the first level bootstraps work for all the architectures. Convert the utility ffsinfo to understand UFS2 and test growfs. Add support for the extended attribute storage. Update soft updates to ensure integrity of extended attribute storage. Switch the current extended attribute interfaces to use the extended attribute storage. Add the extent like functionality (framework is there, but is currently never used). Sponsored by: DARPA & NAI Labs.
